The Workplace and ICT - Research Project

The rapid development of information and communication technologies is transforming the world of work, in terms of employment patterns, workplace activities and assessments, labour relations and industrial structure.

In August 2008 Knowledge Politics will be launching our research programme on ICT and the workplace. Initially we will be publishing a series of e-pamphlets and a special edition of Knowledge Politics Quarterly on related subjects. Experts willing to contribute to these publications are encouraged to get in touch with Head of Policy Craig Berry at  craig.berry [@] knowledgepolitics.org.uk

Subsequently Knowledge Politics and our partner organisations will embark on original research into various aspects of the relationship between ICT and the workplace. Our aim is to both help policy-makers and to enrich public debate on the impacts of technology on people’s lives. Researchers interested in employment opportunities should contact us at info [@] knowledgepolitics.org.uk as early as possible.

Below is a set of links to our resources and the findings of other researchers working on related policy areas.

IPPR Report – Modernizing with Purpose: A Manifesto for Digital Britain
http://www.ippr.org.uk/publicationsandreports/publication.asp?id=297
This report outlines a policy agenda structured around the three strands of ‘modernizing’, ‘delineating’ and ‘recognizing’, and argues that these priorities can provide new purpose to the way in which Britain modernizes its public institutions and economy.

IPPR Report – Technology kicks away the career ladder (by Mike Dixon)
http://www.ippr.org.uk/articles/index.asp?id=1723
This article explores the patterns of the current technology age in which computers have superseded the skills and usefulness of working people, especially those in the middle-ranking professional jobs. This in turn has consequences on the ability to progress, be promoted and learn new skills. Ascendancy from lowly sales assistant to manager is much tougher in today’s world, making it ever-more important for the government to intervene and aid those coming from poorer backgrounds.

IPPR Report - Promoting productivity (by Kate Withers)
http://www.ippr.org.uk/articles/index.asp?id=1353
This article focuses on the advantages of ICT in increasing productivity, efficiency, participation and creativity in the work place. However, it also stresses the dangers of relying too heavily on it and not accepting that employee training it also important. ICT can also act to complicate and duplicate an already complex working environment if not inter=grated properly into the existing system.
