Human
capital in the information
society
A renewed focus on skills and education is
vital for the acheivement of an information society. First, the
application of new technologies throughout life means that people need
new skills in order to gain access to information networks. In a
wider sense, many believe that a knowledge-based culture and economy is
definitive of the information society, and educating the population to
a high level is key to this.

The
Future of
European Universities: renaissance or decay?
Centre for European Reform
This report argues that knowledge is an increasingly crucial factor in
shaping economic life. But Europe's higher education institutions
are slow-moving and under-funded, and are failing to meet the
challenge. The report argues for more resources devoted to
research, improved teaching, new centres of excellence, strengthened
links between education and business, and more autonomy for
universities.
