Employment and the information industries

Changes in the economy and the individual's working life are at the forefront on theorising about the information society - it was the growth of new industries and new types of work that first prompted thinkers to recognise the major shift that is underway.  The pace of change has only accelerated in recent years, as we move far beyond the traditional industrial model that has defined western society for over two centuries.

This report shows that Europe has seen a significant expansion in its knowledge industries over the past decade and at a similar rate to the expansion of knowledge based employment in the US.

The Future of European Universities: renaissance or decay?
This report argues that knowledge is an increasingly crucial factor in shaping economic life.  But Europe's higher education institutions are slow-moving and under-funded, and are failing to meet the challenge.  The report argues for more resources devoted to research, improved teaching, new centres of excellence, strengthened links between education and business, and more autonomy for universities.
